FREQUENTLY ASKED FOUNTAIN QUESTIONS.
What kind of water supply do I need?
These fountains do not need to be hooked to an external water source. The pump needs to be covered with water at all times, and is hidden under the base of the swans. You can add water with a hose or watering can to your basin/pool as needed. This kind of pool-based fountain is much better than self-contained units that recirculate from the bottom tier to the top, which need daily refilling, and splatter water on surrounding floors.
What kind of electrical supply do I need?
The pump requires a grounded three-pronged 115volt outlet. Any outdoor electrical connection should be on a GFI (Ground Fault Interrupt) circuit for safety. Tier Fountain Pump #8065 is an excellent, high-quality pump for this fountain.
How do I prevent or get rid of algae?
We recommend FounTech Algae treatment #8068 for clean, clear algae-free water. Safe for pets(except fish). 1 bottle lasts a year usually. Follow directions on the label to keep your water clean, clear and algae free. It will not harm the finish. Never use any chlorine product. You may prefer to simply empty your fountain every few months and refill with fresh water.
I get a white powdery looking material on my fountain. What is it how do get rid of it?
This is scale, a natural phenomenon anytime water is in constant contact with any surface. It is basically soluble salts deposits. These deposits can normally be controlled with Protech Scale treatment #8062. Safe for pets(except fish)drinking out of the fountain too.
How durable is the finish on my fountain?
Our black and antique painted finishes are designed to last for years of normal use. It is hand painted with enamels. Treat it as you would treat the finish on a fine automobile. (Never use harsh chemicals or scrubbing agents i.e. bleach, chlorine, scouring pads or powders.)
How often do I add water to my fountain?
This depends on heat, humidity and wind conditions. We recommend checking the water level weekly and adding as needed. If you will be away from home for more than a couple of days it is best to turn off the fountain to eliminate the possibility of the pump running without water. Many owners control their fountains with small electrical timers.
What happens if I let my fountain run dry?
It is of course best to prevent the fountain from running dry. But if this occurs turn off the pump and allow it to completely cool down. Adding cold water to a dry hot pump can cause the pump to crack or “seize”. After the pump has completely cooled down add water and restart. In most cases the pump will be Ok. If not it will have to be replaced.
How do I winterize my outdoor fountain?
If used outdoors, anytime a freeze is predicted it is best to drain the fountain and run the pump to remove all water. Use a syphon hose or small paper or styrofoam cup to "bail" the water from the upper bowl/s. If water is allowed to remain in the fountain during freezing conditions there is the possibility that the fountain could crack.
Do I need a concrete base for my fountain?
No. It only requires a firm surface avoid settling or tipping. Wrought Aluminium is lightweight.
Any assembly required?
No, the fountain comes complete with no installation required, aside from attaching the pump and setting the basin/pool.
